From Staff and Wire Reports
UCLA is dropping water polo from its sports program because of budget problems, it was learned Wednesday.
A university spokesman said the school will not comment until Friday. It’s believed that an announcement will be made that another minor sport will also be terminated.
UCLA has a $3-million deficit in the athletic department, prompting the cutback. Currently, the Bruin athletic department supervises 23 sports--13 for men and 10 for women.
UCLA’s water polo team won NCAA championships in 1969, ’71 and ’72.
