It was a mixed day of trading on overseas stock markets:
* In London, stocks ended only slightly higher after muddled afternoon trading in which dealers tried to assess the chances of Iraq leaving Kuwait. The Financial Times-Stock Exchange index of 100 leading shares closed 2.5 points higher at 2,296.9.
* In Frankfurt, German shares jumped on news that Iraq was offering a withdrawal, but fell back after it became clear that the offer was highly conditional. The DAX index of 30 leading shares closed up 44.67 points at 1,531.19.
* In Tokyo, stocks dipped slightly. The Nikkei average slipped 12.63 points to end at 25,343.74.
