The War, a Movie and Stereotyping

So Nayereh Tohidi didn’t like the way the movie “Not Without My Daughter” portrayed Betty Mahmoody’s husband (Counterpunch, “Stop Stereotyping Arabs and Iranians,” Jan. 21). Tough tacos! I would remind Tohidi that the film is based on a true experience, one that was grievous and traumatic for Mahmoody. Her husband, Sayyed, was a liar, a sneak and a very bad doctor.
I see no reason Betty Mahmoody should suppress the truth to please U.S. Iranians. Furthermore, does Tohidi think that Americans are so dumb that we can’t separate the good guys from the bad guys? After all, Betty Mahmoody would never have escaped Iran without the help of sympathetic Iranians.
