LOCAL : L.A. County Redistricting Upheld

From Times Wire Services

The Supreme Court today left intact a redistricting plan designed to help elect the first Latino to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors in 115 years.

The justices rejected arguments by board members that the plan--ordered by a federal judge--is unlawful.

The five-member board, controlled by conservatives, was accused by Latinos in 1988 of violating their rights by drawing districts after the 1980 census that allegedly diluted Latino voting strength.
