Batt Sparks UC San Diego to Victory Over Redlands

Rick Batt hit eight of 10 shots from the field and scored 23 points to lead UC San Diego past Redlands, 114-91.
The Tritons (8-2), who also got 21 points from Tim Rapp, jumped out to a 55-29 halftime lead after shooting 64% from the field in the first half. Redlands (7-3) was led by Brad Jaques, who had 23 points.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Senior forward Christi English scored 12 points and grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds, and the University of San Diego (3-6) snapped a two-game losing streak with a 61-54 victory over Cal State Northridge (4-8).
USD took its first lead, 48-46, with 10:19 remaining when Chato Platero hit a layup. The Toreras led 55-54 with one minute left, but Debbie Gollnick hit four free throws and English two to preserve the victory.
USD plays host to Colorado at 7:30 p.m. Friday and to seventh-ranked Nevada Las Vegas at 5 p.m. Saturday.
TABLE TENNIS
Top-seeded Jim Butler of Iowa City, Iowa, posted three victories Saturday at the United States Table Tennis Assn.’s National Championship and takes an 8-0 mark into today’s remaining three rounds.
Also advancing in the men’s open division are McLean, Va.’s Sean O’Neill (8-0) and Washington D.C.’s John Onifade (9-0), both seeded players. They will play at 10 a.m. and 12 and 3 p.m. at the San Diego Convention Center.
Julie Au of Daly City, top seeded in the women’s open division, and Lillie Hugh of Cocoa, Fla. are both 8-0 and advanced to the final three matches. Au and Hugh will play defending champion Insook Bhushan of Aurora, Colo, and Wei Wang, both 7-1, in today’s round-robin play at 9 and 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
