World IN BRIEF : COSTA RICA : Quake Cuts Power, Frightens Shoppers

A series of earthquakes shook Costa Rica, shattering windows and sending panicked Christmas shoppers into the streets. There were no reports of injuries. The strongest of at least six temblors--with a magnitude of 5.7--crumbled the wall of an empty prison, loosened chunks from the facade of a bank building and briefly cut off telephone and electric service. A 1,000-foot-wide landslide blocked a road west from San Jose.
