Rutter: Te Deum, and other church music. Cambridge Singers, City of London Sinfonia, conducted by John Rutter. Collegium Records COLCD 112 (compact disc). These anthems and liturgical pieces--13 cuts, of which the Te Deum is the longest at just over seven minutes--have had their keyboard accompaniments orchestrated by Rutter for this disc. One of the most prolific and best-selling of contemporary choral composers, Rutter creates consistently assured, stylistically conservative and readily singable music, as his much-recorded choir proves here with sweet, poised performances. It can also be bland and even cloying, as the utterly risk-free performances also demonstrate.
