From Times Staff and Wire Reports
Over the protests of environmentalists, the U.S. Forest Service has approved the revival of a skiing area on Mt. Shasta in Northern California. However, the decision is expected to prompt lawsuits. The resort plan, designed to serve 5,000 skiers at a time, is on the site of a ski resort that operated for 20 years before being closed after an avalanche in 1978. Revival of Shasta skiing has been fought since 1984 by the Wilderness Society and other environmental lobbying groups.
