About 2,100 residential customers and 46 businesses lost power just after 2 p.m. Friday when a San Diego Gas & Electric transformer malfunctioned, company officials said.
The transformer, at the Kettner Boulevard substation at Palm Street, produced a loud boom when its circuit breaker tripped, shutting off power to residential customers in the western end of Hillcrest, said Maurice Luque, company spokesman.
Power was restored to residential customers at 3:30 p.m. and to businesses in the Harbor Drive area near Lindbergh Field by 4:30 p.m., Fred Vaughn, another company spokesman, said. The airport was not affected.
A portable transformer will be used until it is determined what caused the failure and the transformer is repaired, Vaughn said.
Company officials said such malfunctions usually happen once or twice a year, and usually during lightning storms.
