U.N. Stalls Debate on Mideast Talks

UNITED NATIONS — The U.N. Security Council, failing to agree on whether to hold a Middle East peace conference, decided late Saturday to postpone discussions on the issue until Monday.
Diplomats said nonaligned nations wanted to call for the conference, which would address the plight of Palestinians in Israeli-occupied territories. But the United States indicated it would veto such a call if it were put to a vote.
