Venice : School Gets $50,000 Grant

The Coeur D’Alene Avenue Elementary Schoool in Venice has received a $50,000 grant to continue its program for homeless students.
About one-third of the school’s students, or about 70 youngsters, are homeless or transients. The grant from the Weingart Foundation will fund the Connection Project, which offers tutoring, extra psychological and medical care, computer lab instruction in reading and writing and help for parents in obtaining social services.
The project provides “the stable environment (the students) need to be academically successful,” said Los Angeles school board member Mark Slavkin in announcing the grant. The project started last year with funds from the Greater Los Angeles Partnership for the Homeless.
