Irwindale : Waste Reduction Authority
The City Council has unanimously voted to join other San Gabriel Valley cities in developing a plan to reduce the amount of landfill waste.
The city last Thursday became the latest member to join the East San Gabriel Valley Integrated Waste Management-Joint Powers Authority, which was created to meet a state requirement that cities reduce waste by 25% by 1995 and 50% by the year 2000.
Because of its small population and area, Irwindale’s share of the costs to the authority will be less than $100 a year, City Engineer Carlos Alvarado said.
Alvarado also said a pilot recycling program will begin in December or January, so that officials can determine how much refuse is generated in the city.
