Withdrawals From S&Ls; Slow In May: The Office of Thrift Supervision reported that net withdrawals from the nation’s savings and loans slowed to $7 billion in May after soaring to a record $15.1 billion a month earlier. Depositors withdrew $3.2 billion from 2,471 solvent S&Ls; and another $3.8 billion from the 312 failed institutions operated under government control. That compares to a net outflow in April of $9.6 billion at solvent institutions and $5.4 billion at government-run thrifts. The agency is about three months behind in its reporting of financial data.
