SCORE Off-Roaders at Phoenix Raceway

PHOENIX — The one-mile oval at Phoenix International Raceway has been covered with 5,000 yards of dirt for the 17th SCORE Off-Road World Championship that begins today.
The race, held at Riverside International Raceway for 16 years until the track was razed, will feature a variety of desert vehicles and stadium cars and trucks on a 1.1-mile course.
Top drivers from both desert and stadium racing will compete for two days. Among the entries are truck-driving rivals Walker Evans of Riverside, Rod Hall of Reno and Ivan Stewart of Alpine.
Robby Gordon, who has been absent from off-road racing while competing on the International Motor Sports Assn. circuit, also is entered in the pickup truck class.
