Stephens Critical After Open-Heart Surgery

Woody Stephens, a Hall of Fame thoroughbred trainer, underwent open-heart surgery Friday for complications that arose while he was hospitalized for emphysema in Louisville, Ky.

Stephens, 76, was in critical condition after the 5 1/2-hour operation during which surgeons performed a quadruple bypass, Norton Hospital spokeswoman Pam Greer-Ullrich said.

Stephens won the Kentucky Derby twice, in 1974 with Cannonade and in 1984 with Swale. He has been hospitalized for two weeks for chronic breathing problems.
