THOUSAND OAKS : University Cancels Lecture on Safe Sex

A lecture on safe sex at Cal Lutheran University has been canceled because of opposition from concerned Thousand Oaks residents.

In a statement released Wednesday, university President Jerry Miller said he canceled the lecture Tuesday because a flyer was “in poor taste and led many to conclude that certain behaviors were approved or condoned at Cal Lutheran, and this is not the case.”

In an effort to attract students, the flyer advertised the lecture as part of a party to celebrate National Outdoor Intercourse Day.

Dutch Randall, a 23-year-old senior who helped organize the event, said university officials told him Tuesday that they had received more than 200 phone calls from people who had seen the flyer or heard about the lecture. Randall said he was told to cancel it.

“People were calling thinking we were going to have this big orgy,” said Randall, who stressed that the event was going to feature a 10-minute talk on safe sex and abstinence, a game of “Twister” and an educational game about sexually transmitted diseases.

In his statement, Miller said publicity from the flyer “was slanted toward sensationalizing and trivializing the important matters of sex education and sexual awareness.

The lecture will be rescheduled for the fall, Randall said.
