Citicorp Passes American Express: Citicorp had issued 35 million MasterCard, Visa and Diners Club cards, according to year-end data published by the companies. While Citicorp has long led U.S. banks in MasterCard and Visa issuance, it now lays claim to an international leadership position, with cards a linchpin of its global consumer banking strategy. American Express Travel Related Services Co. said it had issued 34 million green, gold, platinum and Optima cards worldwide at the end of 1989.
