PREP BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Santa Ana Valley’s Crosby Shuts Down Corona del Mar, 9-1

Scott Crosby didn’t allow a hit for four innings as Santa Ana Valley High School defeated Corona del Mar, 9-1, in the first round of the Newport Elks’ baseball tournament Monday.
Crosby (1-0) struck out three and did not walk a batter. He was relieved in the fifth by Jose Arroyo, who gave up a run. Santa Ana Valley coaches pulled Crosby, who was six pitches shy of his early-season limit of 50.
Crosby had two hits and a run batted in for Santa Ana Valley (1-0). Mike Murtaugh had two hits and two RBIs and Juan Sanchez had a hit and two RBIs for the Falcons.
In other Newport tournament games:
Foothill 11, Capistrano Valley 6--Kent Donnelly had a grand slam and pitched five innings, getting five strikeouts for host Foothill (1-0).
Santa Ana 12, Mater Dei JV 5--Victor Franco hit a two-run home run and John Morales and Santiago Lopez each had three hits and scored three runs for host Santa Ana (1-0).
Saddleback 10, Orange 7--Tommy Smith had a two-run single and a sacrifice fly and Ralph Cedillo had two hits and two RBIs for Saddleback (3-0). Ruben Hernandez hit a three-run homer for Orange (0-3).
Mission Viejo 2, Estancia 1--Greg Brannis of Estancia pitched a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts, but Mission Viejo scored two unearned runs. Steve Evans (1-0) allowed three hits for visiting Mission Viejo.
Mission Viejo’s only hit was a two-out double in the fifth by Mark Newman. Pinch-runner Alex Diaz scored on a throwing error.
In the championship bracket of the Loara tournament:
Fountain Valley 11, Diamond Bar 6--Derek Brown had two hits, including a three-run homer, and four RBIs for host Fountain Valley (2-0).
El Dorado 4, Riverside North 1--Pitcher Andy Brazeel allowed three hits and struck out six for host El Dorado (2-0).
Lakewood 5, Laguna Hills 0--Laguna Hills’ Kevin Lovengier had a two-out single in the seventh inning to break up a no-hitter by Lakewood’s Dave Reeser.
Ocean View 13, Kennedy 1--Dan Hernandez had three hits and scored four runs, and sophomore Micah Edwardson had an RBI triple and three-run home run for host Ocean View (2-0).
Sunny Hills 14, Los Alamitos 6--Brian Veronda had three hits, scored two runs and had two RBIs for host Sunny Hills (2-2).
Katella 11, Magnolia 4--Eric Boyd had three hits and three RBIs and Dennis Briggs hit a solo home run for Katella (2-0).
Savanna 6, University 3--Doug Sutton’s two RBI keyed a four-run fifth inning for Savanna (2-0). University dropped to 1-1.
In the consolation bracket:
Pacifica 7, Western 6--Chris Castellano doubled in two runs to give Pacifica the lead in the sixth.
Newbury Park 6, El Toro 3--Dave Owens had two hits and two RBIs for El Toro (0-2).
La Quinta 8, Irvine 7--Anthony Beltran had a bases-loaded single in the seventh to drive in Matt Logan with the game-winning run. Logan had started the inning with a double. Mike Seal had three hits with two RBIs for Irvine (0-2).
Villa Park 3, Los Amigos 2--Danny Strapp walked, stole second, went to third on a throwing error and scored on sacrifice fly by James Hong in the seventh for host Villa Park (1-1).
Huntington Beach 4, Loara 0--Kenny Mays pitched six-plus innings, allowing six hits and striking out six for the victory at Boysen Park in Anaheim.
San Clemente 7, Downey 2--Doug DeLaGarza hit a two-run home run, and had an RBI double to lead host San Clemente (1-1). He also threw a three-hitter with five strikeouts. Ken Dolan hit a solo home run for San Clemente.
Cypress 4, Marina 2--Catcher David Dzurilla threw out three runners trying to steal, had three hits, including two doubles, and two RBIs for Cypress (1-1). Marina is 0-2.
Santiago 5, Anaheim 3--Kip Cruz had a triple and two RBIs to lead Santiago (3-1) in the consolation round.
