Four-time champion Rick Swenson led in the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, which continued along a trail strewn with volcanic ash from the most recent eruption of Redoubt Volcano.
Swenson was first Monday morning at Rainy Pass checkpoint, 274 miles from the finish in Nome, Alaska.
