Salter Pledges $140,000 of His Funds for Schools

Beverly Hills Mayor Max Salter, who spent about $100,000 when he first ran for office four years ago, said Monday that he would try to raise the same amount this year but hold his spending to $30,000 and give the remainder to help the city’s school system.
Salter, owner of Beno’s, a statewide chain of clothing stores, said at a cocktail party to kick off his campaign that he would match the expected donations out of his personal funds, making for a total contribution of $140,000 to the Beverly Hills Education Foundation.
Salter will be running against fellow incumbent Robert K. Tanenbaum, an attorney and novelist, and challenger Trisha Roth, a pediatrician who is active in campaigns against alcohol abuse, in the April 3 vote to fill two seats on the five-member City Council.
