The American League leaders in home runs and runs batted in 1989 avoided arbitration and earned big raises.
Toronto Blue Jay first baseman Fred McGriff, who hit 36 home runs, agreed to a one-year contract worth about $1.5 million. McGriff had asked for $1,675,000 in arbitration and the Blue Jays had offered $1,225,000. He made $325,000 last season.
Texas Ranger outfielder Ruben Sierra, who earned $357,500 when he knocked in 119 runs, agreed to a one-year contract for $1,625,000. Sierra had asked for $1.9 million in arbitration and the team had offered $1.15 million.
