ON THE SIDELINES : Fortuna II First in Regatta

RIO DE JANEIRO — Fortuna II of Argentine crossed the finish line first in the Buenos Aires-Rio regatta Monday.
Blanca Stela of Chile was next, 45 minutes later. Third, nearly two hours behind Blanca Stela was Magic, also of Argentina. Twenty-eight boats from Australia, Argentina, Chile, Brazil and the United States were in the 1,200-mile race, considered one of the most prestigious in South America.
Although the Fortuna II was first to finish, it did not necessarily win. The boats’ times will be corrected by a formula that handicaps the heavier, faster vessels.
The winner will be announced on Sunday.
