Driver, Safety Worker Are Injured

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Driver Julius (Slick) Johnson was critically injured and a track safety worker sustained serious injuries Sunday during the crash-filled Daytona ARCA 200 late model stock car race.

Both Johnson and worker Mike Staley were transported by helicopter to nearby Halifax Medical Center.

Johnson, a 41-year-old driver from Florence, S.C., was in extremely critical condition with a fracture to the base of his skull, as well as chest and other internal injuries.

A track spokesman said Johnson had been placed on a respirator and was under intensive care. Staley, 35, of the Port Orange, Fla., fire department, was reported in serious but stable condition with a fractured and burned left forearm and multiple cuts and bruises.
