A 17-year-old Santa Ana girl was in critical condition with a broken hip and internal injuries Sunday night after she lost control of her car and drove it into a huge construction tractor, which overturned.
Irvine police said Maria I. Sandoval failed to follow a curve in the road on Irvine Center Drive just north of the San Diego Freeway about 6:42 a.m. Her car first ran over a fire hydrant, then rammed head-on into the construction tractor, which was parked for use on an extension of Pacifica Way.
The young woman was treated by Orange County Fire Department paramedics, then flown to Mission nity Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo by helicopter. A police spokesman said she was still in surgery Sunday evening.
Police said that the accident apparently was not alcohol-related and that the driver was not wearing a seat belt.
