Seahawk to Perform on ‘Jazz Live’

Bassist Marshall Hawkins has a resume about as tall as his instrument (work with Miles Davis, Roberta Flack, Richie Cole), but some of his most important work in recent years has come as head of the jazz program at Idyllwild School of Music and the Arts.
Tuesday night at 8, in honor of Black History Month, Hawkins’ group, Seahawk, will perform in KSDS-FM’s (88.3) “Jazz Live” concert series at the campus theater, on C Street, between 13th and 15th streets.
Hawkins and his band, which includes drummer John “Ironman” Harris, guitarist Bob Boss, alto saxman Evan Kunst and percussionists Roy Gonzalez and Mark Beres, will focus on the music of pianist Thelonious Monk, an essential link in the black jazz chain.
For Hawkins, the band serves artistic and practical purposes, as an outlet for his playing and as a laboratory for his students, several of whom will be on hand Tuesday as special guests.
Hawkins said several tunes--by Monk and others--will feature the percussionists, so they promise to be crowd-pleasers, especially for young listeners. He encouraged parents to bring their children.
The two-hour concert is free. KSDS-FM will broadcast the show live.
