NATION IN BRIEF : MASSACHUSETTS : New Plane to Probe South Pole’s Ozone

Scientists are building a remote-controlled aircraft to fly through the hole in the ozone layer over the South Pole next fall, Harvard University said. The craft, which will have a 60-foot wingspan and be built of graphite and other lightweight materials, will fly up to 85,000 feet above Antarctica, said James Anderson, a professor of atmospheric chemistry. The battery-powered aircraft will seek information about the ozone layer, which scientists say has been damaged by chlorofluorocarbons from air conditioners and other sources.
