Goodbys to the Shoe, Fond and Otherwise

An open letter to Bill Shoemaker:
As you bring to an end your most illustrious career as the greatest jockey of all time, I wish to send my thanks and those of all $2 bettors for being “Our Jockey.”
We of the horse racing world know that you are small in body but big in ability and heart. The thrills of victory are many to you and, as I think back to the days when you climbed aboard that great horse Swaps, I can hear the crowd yelling, “Come on, Shoe!”
Tomorrow you start a new career of horse training. I, with millions of fans, wish you the best.
Do all of us a big favor on your last ride and make it to the finish line first.
L. T. (BUD) ROSE, Huntington Beach
