P.M. BRIEFING : Fewer Food Pesticides Says FDA

WASHINGTON — The Food and Drug Administration reported today it is finding slightly fewer pesticides in food, but environmentalists questioned if the FDA’s inspection efforts are adequate to gauge food safety.
The FDA said 61% of the 18,114 food samples tested in 1988 showed no signs of pesticide residues, compared with 57% of samples checked in 1987.
Of samples found to contain pesticide residue, less than 1% of domestic and imported food samples exceeded safety levels set by the Environmental Protection Agency, the FDA said.
