U.S. Proposes Record Fines Against USX: The Labor Department proposed a record $7.3 million in fines against USX Corp. for alleged safety, health and record-keeping violations at two of its steel plants. Since 1972, the Fairless Hills steel mill and Clairton coke works in Pennsylvania have had a total of 17 fatal accidents, the government said. Labor Secretary Elizabeth Hanford Dole accused Pittsburgh-based USX, formerly U.S. Steel, of “corporate indifference” to safety and health concerns. USX has 15 working days to contest the citations and proposed penalties.
