University High School scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to defeat Woodbridge, 17-3, before 2,400 Friday night at Irvine Stadium.
University took a 10-3 lead when quarterback Brian Vale connected with Victor Davis on a 40-yard touchdown pass with 7:59 left to play.
It appeared that Woodbridge (1-2) would tie the score when the Warriors moved to the University 10-yard line. But on a second-down play, Trojan defensive back Donnell Dowdy intercepted Gary Fishel’s pass at the two and ran 98 yards for a touchdown, giving University a 17-3 lead with 2:33 remaining.
Woodbridge took an early lead when Troy Holme kicked a 28-yard field goal with 6:43 left in the first quarter. The score remained 3-0 until University’s David Jacobson kicked a 41-yard field goal with 7:50 left in third quarter.
The Trojans (1-2) broke a three-game losing streak against Woodbridge, which has a 4-3 advantage in the series. The teams tied in 1985.
Both teams had trouble on offense in the penalty-filled game. Woodbridge was penalized 13 times for 165 yards, University was penalized 11 times for 135 yards.
