High School Football Roundup : Just Another Big Victory for Grossmont, 42-19

Grossmont and Mt. Miguel were both looking for something as they entered their nonleague game Friday night in Spring Valley. Neither found it.

Mt. Miguel was trying to find its once-dominating defense that had allowed 49 points in two games this season and No. 8 Grossmont was looking for somebody to test them after outscoring its first two opponents 87-0.

But the game turned out to be no contest as Grossmont’s high-powered offense took advantage of Mt. Miguel’s high-risk defense for a 42-19 victory.

Grossmont (3-0) needed a last-second field goal to beat Mt. Miguel (1-1-1) last year. This time all it needed was running back Keith Price.

Price scored on runs of 92 and 53 yards and Jack Bewley scored on a 45-yard run. Quarterback Trevor Hanks threw touchdown passes of 18 and nine yards to Bryon Woodworth and Hanks scored on a three-yard bootleg.

“Their inside linebackers were flooding,” Price said of the three long touchdown runs. “On the 53-yard touchdown, I didn’t even get touched.”

Price finished with 208 yards on 14 carries, two catches for 34 yards and an interception.

Grossmont took a 14-0 lead on Price’s 92-yard run and Bewley’s touchdown.

After a lost fumble, Grossmont gave up its first points of the year when Mt. Miguel’s Steve Lindley threw a 65-yard touchdown pass to Victor Ware. After holding Grossmont on the next series, Mt. Miguel drove the ball 38-yards after a short punt to pull within 14-13 on a three-yard run by Corey White.

Grossmont did not let up the pressure in the second half as Hanks scored on a keeper on the Foothillers’ first series of the half. Price then ran 53 yards on Grossmont’s next possession to give the Foothillers’ a 35-13 lead.
