High School Roundup : Glendale’s Roca Rolls to Cross-Country Win

In his first cross-country race, Glendale High sophomore Gilberto Roca toured the three-mile course at Verdugo Park in 16 minutes, 55 seconds to win by more than a minute and lead the Dynamiters past Burroughs, 25-30, Thursday in a nonleague meet.
Burroughs, a runner short because of disciplinary reasons, placed three runners in the top five. However, Glendale’s Nos. 3 through 5 runners finished in the sixth, seventh and eighth places.
GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL
Thousand Oaks d. Westlake, 15-9, 13-15, 15-9, 15-11--Senior defensive specialist Phronsie Franco served 15 points to bring the Lancers back from 9-6 and 10-3 deficits in the third and fourth games, respectively, in a Marmonte League meet at Thousand Oaks.
Setters Shauna Campbell and Amy Chellevold each had nine kills for Thousand Oaks (5-0, 1-0).
Royal d. Camarillo, 15-3, 15-4, 15-4--Wende Brown had 14 service points in a Marmonte League match at Royal. Michelle Pagan had 12 assists for Royal (3-0, 2-0).
Newbury Park d. Channel Islands, 15-5, 15-2, 15-5--Jenny Cameron led Newbury Park (1-3, 1-1) with 13 kills in a Marmonte League match. Sophie Sobol added seven kills.
Notre Dame d. Campbell Hall, 15-9, 16-14, 8-15, 15-5--Mary Strong led the Knights with 11 kills and nine aces in a nonleague match at Notre Dame. Jill Hawden added five aces for Notre Dame (2-2).
Burroughs d. Crescenta Valley--15-5, 15-6, 15-7--Loretta Russell and Jennifer Wagner each had nine kills for Burroughs (5-0) in a nonleague match at Burroughs.
Cleveland d. Reseda, 13-15, 15-7, 15-8, 15-13--Senior Monica Martin and freshman Michele Diana combined for 13 put-aways for host Cleveland in a nonleague match.
La Reina d. Moorpark, 15-11, 15-5, 15-1--La Reina (2-1, 1-0) downed host Moorpark (4-1, 1-1) in a Tri-Valley League match. Carolyn Russo had 10 kills and Heather Freeman added six for La Reina.
BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY
Notre Dame 15, St. Francis 43--Notre Dame swept the first five places of a nonleague meet at Pierce College. Eddie Diaz (18:09) paced the Knights (2-1).
WATER POLO
Crespi 20, Crescenta Valley 2--Rusty King scored eight goals to lead Crespi in a nonleague match at Crescenta Valley.
Agoura 18, Oxnard 5--Kevin Driscoll scored four goals as Agoura won a first-round consolation game in the Buena tournament. Agoura (5-1) was defeated by Santa Paula, 8-7, in the tournament opener earlier in the day.
