Airlines Raise Some Fares: Many of the nation’s airlines have raised one type of discount fare popular with business travelers by $20 one way. The fares carry no restrictions and can be purchased on a “walk-up” basis. However, they are “capacity controlled,” which means that the airlines limit the number of seats available at the low price. American Airlines said only about 1% of its fares are affected. Continental Airlines said fares on only a “tiny” number of its 9,000 routes were raised. Eastern Airlines said that it had raised a few fares but that there had been no across-the-board increase. Delta said it had boosted “relatively few” fares.
