Safeway Yanks Product: Safeway Stores Inc., responding to a complaint from environmentalists, is pulling Liquid Paper correction fluid from its shelves because it does not bear a Proposition 65 cancer warning, store officials said. Safeway chain notified Gillette Co., the manufacturer of Liquid Paper, that it was removing the white-out fluid from all 213 stores in California because consumers are not receiving adequate warning that the product contains trichloroethylene, a chemical known to cause cancer. Gillette, however, insisted that Liquid Paper is harmless and criticized the grocery chain for taking the item off its shelves.
