ARLINGTON, Tex. — Texas Rangers catcher Jim Sundberg said today he will retire at the end of the season.
Sundberg said his sore shoulder, a bad thumb on his catching hand and a bad knee told him it was time to quit.
The 38-year-old Sundberg has played only three times and started once since Geno Petralli returned from the disabled list Aug. 19. Sundberg is hitting .189 with two homers and six RBIs in 132 at-bats.
On Aug. 8, Sundberg reached a career milestone in Toronto when he moved past Al Lopez into second place on the all-time games-caught list. Sundberg has caught 1,025 games in his 16 major league seasons. Only Bob Boone of Kansas City, at 2,171, has caught more games.
One of the top defensive catchers in major league history, Sundberg has a career fielding percentage of .993, third among catchers with 1,000 or more games. He has only 81 errors.
Sundberg said he has considered going into broadcasting.
