A Los Angeles-bound Amtrak train derailed Sunday night about a mile outside the San Diego station, but there were no injuries and no serious damage, an Amtrak spokesman said Monday. The derailment, described as minor, involved the locomotive and the coach immediately behind the engine, said Arthur Lloyd, Amtrak’s director of public affairs for the Western region. He said it occurred shortly after the train left the San Diego station at about 6:45 p.m. Sunday. “We don’t know the cause. A number of things have to be investigated,” he said. “There were no injuries, no (passenger) discomforts and no major damage.” The eight cars that remained on the track were pulled back to San Diego and consolidated with another Los Angeles-bound train that left later Sunday night.
