Kohl Seeks Warmer Ties With Poland

BONN — West German Chancellor Helmut Kohl telephoned Polish Prime Minister Tadeusz Mazowiecki on Thursday, the eve of the 50th anniversary of the Nazi invasion of Poland, to seek reconciliation between their countries.
A government statement said Kohl called Mazowiecki to stress the special responsibility of those who had lived through the war to make sure it would not be repeated.
“We owe that to our children’s generation,” it quoted Kohl as saying. “Fifty years after the beginning of the Second World War, the time has come for a lasting reconciliation.”
The telephone conversation was detailed and friendly, it said.
