A Matter of Focus
Recently I paid $6.50 to see “Field of Dreams” at one of my area’s priciest theaters, and it made my stomach turn to have to watch the entire film out of focus.
As a cameraman in movies and as one of the focus assistants on “Field,” I urge the movie audience to demand to see films as the film makers intended them to be seen.
The next time you are viewing a film that seems out of focus, please take 30 seconds to complain to the projectionist or house manager.
A good reference to a film’s sharpness comes at the beginning--the main titles. If these titles appear fuzzy, there is a good chance the print you are seeing is out of focus.
Please, take that 30 seconds; I and my colleagues want you to get what you are paying for.
