With a tea party, vaudeville show and Victorian home tour in the offing, this Mother’s Day weekend shows real potential for a non-commercial, old-fashioned celebration. Best of all, children can escort their mothers to family events without breaking the piggy bank.
At Heritage Square Museum in Highland Park, a mother accompanied by a child will be admitted at half-price. In addition to touring the carefully restored homes, there will be a fashion show of Victorian clothing on the lawn throughout the afternoon. Guides, dressed in period costume, will conduct tours of the village and some of the homes, including the spectacular Hale House.
Heritage Square is located at 3800 Homer St., off the Avenue 43 exit of the Pasadena Freeway. Admission: adults, $4.50; free to children under 12. Hours: noon to 4 p.m. Information: (818) 796-2898.
The Discovery Museum of Orange County celebrates Mother’s Day today with an old-fashioned tea party, in the museum’s new Centennial Garden. With classical music filling the air and dainty sandwiches, tea cakes, scones and preserves filling the appetite, youngsters and their mothers also can visit the Kellogg House, which is being restored by the museum.
The tea party begins at 11:30 a.m. today. Admission is $10 for adults, $7 for children 12 and under. Reservations are suggested. The museum is at 3101 W. Harvard St. in Santa Ana. Information: (714) 540-0404.
At the Church in Ocean Park, 235 Hill St., David-Michael Monasch will present a special Mother’s Day performance of his one-man show “Fool/Moon Rising,” which includes magic, juggling and mime. Show time is 7 p.m., tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for children 14 and under. Reservations: (213) 399-1631.
