Cal State Northridge’s quest for a fifth NCAA Division II softball title begins in earnest today when the Lady Matadors meet Cal State Dominguez Hills in the opening round of the West regional tournament at Northridge.
Cal Poly San Luis Obispo will meet defending-national champion Cal State Bakersfield in the first game at 9 a.m., and Northridge will face Dominguez Hills at 11 a.m. The losers will meet in an elimination game at 1:30 p.m., and the winners will face off at 3:30.
The double-elimination tournament will conclude Sunday with the winner advancing to the national championships.
All four regional entries are from the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. Northridge (60-17) won the conference, San Luis Obispo placed second and Bakersfield finished third.
“Everyone knows what everyone else can do,” CSUN Coach Gary Torgeson said. “I’m approaching it positively. Our kids know they can beat these teams. We’re playing at home and we know what’s at stake.”
