Quayle’s Trip

Regarding the recent trip of Vice President Dan Quayle to the South Pacific and Asia reported in The Times (Part I, May 2):
My reaction is that I would like to see the money that I pay in taxes used for more intelligent and constructive purposes than to send a simpleton like Dan Quayle off on a trip where it seems he’s done little else than play basketball, jog, play tennis, play golf, and go scuba diving.
His comments to people in a crowd around him in Australia sounded not only more adolescent than vice presidential, but stupid as well.
Even though he was there for some official purposes, he was “seeming to chafe at the lack of . . . free time to enjoy himself.”
Are the hard-pressed taxpayers supposed to provide free entertainment for the next four years for this simpleton?
