Anderson Breaks Meet Record as USC Beats UCLA in Swimming

Gary Anderson of USC broke a 13-year-old meet record in winning the 200-meter backstroke, placed second in the 200 individual medley and swam on the winning 400 medley relay team to help USC edge UCLA, 57-56, Saturday in a Pacific 10 Conference dual swim meet at UCLA.

Anderson’s record time in the 200 backstroke was 1 minute 48.58 seconds. The old mark of 1:50.7 was set by USC’s John Naber in 1976.

USC’s Lars Jorgensen, a freshman, won the 1,650-meter freestyle in 15:30 and placed third in the 500 free, and his brother, Dan Jorgensen, a junior, won the 200 freestyle in 1:39.98, and placed third in the 200 butterfly.

The meet was decided when UCLA failed to finish 1-2 in the 200 breaststroke, the second from last event. USC led, 54-43, going into the event, and Ray Looze finished second, giving the Trojans the three points they needed to win. UCLA won the final event, the 400 freestyle relay.

USC is 8-2 in dual meets this season and 3-2 against Pacific 10 opponents. The Bruins are 8-3 and 2-3.

For UCLA, Mark Dean remained unbeaten in eight 200 butterfly races this season, winning in a meet record time of 1:47.53. The old mark of 1:48.13 was set by USC’s Dave Cademartori in 1986.
