Santa Anita had the sixth-highest win mutuel payoff in its 52-season history Thursday when Bel Darling, a previously unraced 3-year-old filly, won the fourth race and paid $233.40. It was the biggest win payoff since Ergo paid $251.60 on Jan. 29, 1982. Playmay returned a record $673.40 in 1938.
Bel Darling, trained by Paul Kooba and ridden by Frank Olivares, went off at odds of nearly 116-1.
In the day’s $36,000 feature, favored Baba Cool, ridden by Chris McCarron, rallied to win her first U.S. race, beating Dreamt by three-quarters of a length on Santa Anita’s turf course. The winner was clocked in 1:15 4/5 for about 6 1/2 furlongs and paid $5.40 to win.
