College Roundup : Pape’s Grand Slam Propels Valley to Tournament Win

Freshman second baseman E. J. Pape was three for four with a grand slam and five runs batted in to lead Valley College to a 10-4 victory over Victor Valley in a first-round game of the seven-team San Bernardino baseball tournament Thursday.
Shortstop Ray Sabado was four for five and scored twice and teammate Mike Caputi was two for three and scored three runs for Valley (7-0-1).
Freshman left-hander Colin Hines (2-0) pitched five innings to earn the win.
In other baseball games:
Mt. San Antonio College 10, Mission 2--Third baseman Cory Karano had two home runs, a double and five RBIs to lead Mt. SAC to a first-round win in the eight-team Mt. SAC tournament.
The Master’s 9, Christ College 7--Craig Johnson, Peter Wilson and Jeff Preston each hit home runs to lead Master’s in an NAIA District 3 game at home.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Pomona-Pitzer 75, Occidental 70--Mike Budenholzer’s uncontested layup with 40 seconds left snapped a 70-70 tie in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Occidental.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Cal Lutheran def. Occidental, 15-8, 15-11, 15-12--It took Cal Lutheran (3-0) only 90 minutes to sweep the Tigers in a nonconference match at Cal Lutheran.
MEN’S TENNIS
Pierce 8, Glendale 1--Steve Oliver, ranked No. 1 in the state, defeated Scott Smith, 6-0, 6-3, to pace the Brahmas (4-0) at Pierce. In doubles, Oliver and Sang Kim defeated Vince Pagkaliwangan and Ramon Cardenas, 6-1, 6-2.
