WORLD : U.S. Agency in Panama to Close

WASHINGTON — A congressional agency that monitors U.S. aid programs in Latin America plans to close its six-person office in Panama because of unsettled conditions in that country, an official said today.
David Littleton, director of operations for national security and international affairs at the General Accounting Office, said he expects that all personnel will have left the office by the middle of the year. They will begin leaving shortly before the presidential election set May 7, he said.
The number of official U.S. personnel from various government agencies in Panama has been scaled back considerably since 1987, when relations between the two countries began to deteriorate.
