Algerians voted on a constitution that would open the way for a multiparty system to replace the monopoly held by the ruling National Liberation Front since independence from France in 1962. About 77% of the 13 million eligible voters cast ballots, the official radio said. Results were expected today, with overwhelming approval predicted. The new constitution was drawn up at President Chadli Bendjedid’s order after anti-austerity riots gripped the North African nation last October.
