High School Soccer Playoffs : Army-Navy, Bishop’s to Play for 1-A Title

After semifinal victories at home Tuesday, No. 1 Army-Navy will meet No. 2 Bishop’s for the San Diego Section 1-A boys’ soccer championship Friday at 5:30 p.m. at Balboa Stadium.
Army-Navy (11-3-3) advanced by defeating No. 4 Santa Fe Christian, 2-1. Bishop’s (14-4-3) beat No. 3 Calvin Christian, 3-1, after the teams tied twice during the regular season.
Calvin Christian finished 10-7-5 and Santa Fe Christian 6-10-2.
Army-Navy’s Lester Surgener and Gabriel Noriega scored to give the Warriors a 2-0 first-half lead. David Cruz and Juan Munoz assisted.
Santa Fe Christian scored with about a minute left in the half.
In Bishop’s victory, Phillip Button scored two second-half goals, and Charlie Marshall had a goal and an assist to lead the Knights.
Marshall scored his 29th goal of the season off Jeff Teitelman’s assist to give Bishop’s a 1-0 halftime lead. After the Crusaders’ George Wilgenburg tied the score, Button, who played in only 12 games, scored his 13th and 14th goals of the season. Marshall assisted one.
In other boys’ soccer:
Class 2-A first round
Crawford 2, USDHS 0--Strikers J.J. Wadas and Justin Zualet scored for Crawford late in the second half to defeat USDHS (9-7-4). Jeremy Hoolihan and Wadas had assists for the Colts (17-7-1). Chris Fillius had five saves in the shutout.
Ramona 6, Christian 1--Kevin McLain, Dean Winther, Derek Drago, Darren Drago, Walter Tovar and Cleave Berzdar each scored for Ramona (19-2-2). Christian finished at 10-9-2.
Mission Bay 3, Rancho Buena Vista 0--Doug Knight scored two goals and Damon Westwood one for Mission Bay (12-4-5). Rancho Buena Vista finished 10-8-5.
Carlsbad 3, St. Augustine 0--Carlsbad (14-6-2) took a 2-0 halftime lead in defeating St. Augustine (11-7-1).
Girls
Class 2-A first round
Grossmont 4, Clairemont 1--Heather Reynolds had two goals and an assist to lead Grossmont (13-3-5) over Clairemont (11-7-4). The Foothillers’ Jenny Strauss scored the first goal of the game at 1:30 in the first half.
Ramona 1, San Diego 0--Ramona (21-2-1) scored 25 minutes into the game to defeat the Cavers (13-5-4). San Diego stopper Dawn Black had suffered a broken ankle 5 minutes earlier.
San Marcos 6, Santana 2--Lisa McCarthy led San Marcos (16-8-1) with three goals and an assist. San Marcos made four of its goals in the first 20 minutes. Santana finished 10-9-6.
Class 3-A pairings game
Mira Mesa 2, Serra 0--Janel Wing and Jessica Fischer scored, and Stacy Rickman recorded a shutout as the Marauders earned the No. 4 seed. Mira Mesa (14-4-3) and Serra (8-8-4), which tied each other twice during the season, were co-champions in the City Eastern League.
