Mater Dei High School’s girls’ soccer team plays host to Long Beach Wilson today in a Southern Section 3-A second-round match at 3 p.m.
Mater Dei, the second-ranked team in the 3-A, is 20-4-2 overall, and defeated Trabuco Hills, 4-0, in last Friday’s first round.
A victory for Mater Dei today would be a landmark as the Monarchs have never advanced past the second round.
The Monarchs, which finished second to Mission Viejo at the Ocean View tournament final this season and last, are led by goalkeeper Michelle Lodyga, sweeper Saule Sadunas and midfielder Tina Manfre.
In other 3-A second-round matches today, No. 6 Canyon (16-2-3) plays host to La Quinta (13-1-4); No. 7 Orange (11-1-2) travels to Santa Barbara (15-6-2); No. 9 Troy (11-2-2) plays host to No. 3 Moreno Valley (15-2-1); El Modena (8-7-2) travels to No. 4 Bishop Amat (12-4-2) and Kennedy (11-9-1) plays host to San Gorgonio (16-4-4).
In another featured 3-A match, top-seeded and undefeated Agoura (19-0) will play host to defending champion Buena (13-8-2). Last season, Buena defeated Esperanza in the 3-A championship match.
