Lars-Boerje Eriksson became the first Swede to win a speed race on the World Cup skiing tour by winning a men’s World Cup super giant slalom by a three-hundredths of a second over West Germany’s Markus Wasmeier.
Swedish skiers have never excelled in downhill or super-G because of the lack of long, steep slopes in Scandinavia.
Eriksson earned his first World Cup victory in 1 minute 17.98 seconds. Wasmeier finished in 1:18.01, and Helmut Mayer of Austria was third in 1:18.29. A giant slalom is scheduled today.
