A man arrested early Saturday for public drunkenness at a fast-food restaurant in Costa Mesa died several hours later after complaining of difficulty breathing.
The man, arrested about 12:30 a.m. Saturday at a Jack-In-The-Box on Harbor Boulevard, was placed in the Costa Mesa City Jail. Jailers found him having trouble breathing about 5:30 a.m., authorities said.
Paramedics were called and the man was transported to College Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:02 a.m.
The Orange County coroner’s office identified the man late Saturday afternoon but would not release his name pending notification of the next of kin, a spokesman said.
Coroner’s office spokesman Ted Sullivan said the cause of death remains under investigation.
